Olives from Mallorca – protected designation of origin

For Mallorca’s agriculture it is a significant step forward: the olives of the island may now carry a seal of approval valid throughout the EU. The trade name “Oliva de Mallorca”, “Aceituna Mallorquina”, “Oliva Mallorquina” and ” Aceituna de Mallorca ” are now a protected designation of origin.

With a corresponding register entry in Brussels, the Balearic regional government has officially set a successful finale to years of efforts. The islands and the region of Málaga are the only two regions that can claim this privileged protection for themselves.

Basis for the request in Brussels was a study of the Balearic Islands University (UIB) from the year 2011. It has been demonstrated that olives from Mallorca have a long cultural history and taste far different than the ones from the mainland. The aroma is usually slightly bitter, and they are especially rich in unsaturated fatty acids.

Mallorca´s olive oil is already for a long time under the protection of the EU. The requirements to obtain the predicate for the fruit of the tree are the processing and seasoning of the olives according to traditional methods. Only vessels up to 8 kilos content may be used for sale.
