Palmas’ Easter processions – an ancient tradition alive-
Deep booming drums dragging through the streets accompany the penitents, many of them walk barefoot the entire path of their procession. They celebrate the suffering of Jesus Christ, as nowhere else in the world. It is a solemn and at the same time almost frightening atmosphere. With their pointed hoods, they remind us, those who are not from Spain, not knowing and living since our childhood this old tradition with its roots in the XVI . Century, inevitably of a certain secret society of the southern United States, luckily here in Mallorca we are several thousand miles away.
Those persons shrouded in robes and hoods are members of fraternities, the so-called , cofradías ‘ and their hoods shall preserve their privacy, for the penitent needs to remain anonymous. In Palma, there are 30 fraternities. The membership is inherited from father to son, in our times also on the daughters. In the Balearic Islands, it is a tradition that these processions pass in silence. Immerse yourself in the light of the candles, the richly with flowers decorated saints and images of the Mother of God and walk in awe and with passion the suffering of Christ. The figures can be seen in advance in Palmas churches. We highly recommend three special processions.
