Fruit and vegetables “Ahoy”
Have you sailed aboard the ferry from Barcelona to Palma? If you have, does it not crosss your mind why there are so many large lorrys on board carrying fruit and vegetables onto the island of Mallorca. In the good old days many Mallorcans were happily employed on the land or were self-employed market gardeners supplying fresh produce that didn’t go off in hours as do much of the supermarket supplies. In fact, sometime I can right-off 50% of the fruit bought from supermarkets and sadly a percentage from the Mallorca’s markets.
Also, you could have knocked me over with a feather recently in regard to a response I received when asking for a campari and fresh orange. The restaurant waitress in Soller said “we don’t have fresh orange as the oranges in Mallorca are no good”. I had just driven through attractive mouth watering orange groves which look as though they are weighted down with inviting ready to pick oranges. I was told most of the oranges I see are not fit to eat or suitable for my fresh drink. Potatoes are excluded from my comments because of the lovely green cultivated areas around Sa Pobla. Some say the best ones form a valuable export and may not make it on local supermarket shelves?
